FALSE: Americablog claims Palin made rape victims pay for rape kits

Smeared again!

John Aravosis  at AmericaBlog has released another Sarah Palin smear – as mayor, she made rape victims pay for their own rape kits.

The article he quotes never mentions Palin nor does it even imply that she supported it.  So where is the proof? Well, she was the mayor when it was happening!! Here’s the so-called damaging evidence:

While the Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies have covered the cost of exams, which cost between $300 to $1,200 apiece, the Wasilla police department does charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests.

Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon does not agree with the new legislation, saying the law will require the city and communities to come up with more funds to cover the costs of the forensic exams.

Interesting.  Well, could then Mayor Palin have done anything about what was happening? Not likely.  Check out the mayoral responsibilities that come directly from the State of Alaska’s website, here’s a .pdf that outlines an Alaskan mayors powers and duties.

Of course, I could be wrong, but here’s something else I found:

The mayor of New York City oversees an emergency service force that includes 37,000 police officers and 11,000 firefighters, while the Wasilla mayor is responsible for 21 officers and doesn’t have to worry about fire services.

The borough, which is like a county, handles thatAs far as crime goes in Wasilla, there were no murders, 7 robberies and 4 rapes in 2005, the latest year for which state figures were available.

So far, there is absolutely no evidence that would lead anyone to believe that then-Mayor Palin supported this measure and even less evidence to support the idea that she could prevent the practice.

Is a correction going to come from Aravosis? Don’t hold your breath.
